I’m sure you read the title, and thought to yourself, whaaaaaat? Every marriage needs romance! Well yes, yes it does. But every marriage also needs laughter. You and your significant other need to be able to laugh with each other, and to laugh at each other.
Laughing with each other is absolutely imperative, because it also gives you a great sense of connection. To be able to laugh with abandon, and enjoy each other in that moment is so awesome, because you are sharing a joke, or experience TOGETHER. The more you laugh together, the more you will enjoy each other’s company. When you’ve had a rough day at work, or a rough day at home with kids, you need to be able to find time to relax, and enjoy your partner’s company. There is nothing like a good laugh to ease away the tensions of the day.
What can you do if you have nothing funny to share? You can always sign up for a joke of the day, and then read it together, or perhaps go into your memory banks for a “remember when….?” and then enjoy a good chuckle or two!
LAUGH EVERY DAY
I try to incorporate laughter into my day, every day with my hubhub. I have to brag right now – my hubby has the most amazing laugh. His eyes crinkle up, and he throws his head back in delight and he laughs with a true wild abandon. I LOVE listening to him laugh! In fact, I have been known to call him at work to tell him something funny, just so I can hear him laugh over the phone. And he never fails to deliver. I have the warm fuzzies right this minute, excuse me while I go make a phonecall……ha ha ha.
Ah yes, where were we? Laughter with our partners. Be creative. Come up with ways to make each other laugh. One of our favorite things to do (and maybe this is TMI but here it is anyhow) is when we go to bed at night, we face each other and wiggle close together until our naked bellies are touching. And then we laugh – usually doing our best imitation of the Austin Powers Dr. Evil forced laugh. And once we start laughing, we can’t stop, and it makes it even funnier watching our tummies jiggle together. We get downright hysterical! Perhaps we should do this every night – I’m sure we are burning calories with all our loud obnoxious HEE HEE and HAW HAW ‘s, and Muah ha ha ha ha’s!.
LAUGH AT EACH OTHER (KINDLY)
Now, we also need to be able to laugh AT each other. I don’t mean in a way that is hurtful, but if you do or say something dumb (like I often do) and your hubby laughs, you should be able to join in with him without being hurt and offended. Don’t be an uptight, stuffy wart-hog faced buffoon, and just laugh at yourself too! Don’t let your pride get in the way of enjoying a good laugh, even if it is at your expense.
We have an amazing four poster bed with columns, and I have to admit that due to having a weak hip, I tend to bump into the corners of the pillars fairly often, giving myself some nicely placed bruises on my hip. My hubby often laughs at me when I bounce off the side of one of them, and immediately utter words I cannot share here. He giggles, and says, “Why do you always do that!” Well DOH – I’m not doing it on purpose, but his silly little giggle makes me laugh, and then he laughs, and then we BOTH laugh, and what do you know, it doesn’t even hurt anymore!
LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE
Choosing to laugh instead of choosing to be angry is really powerful. When your pets destroy your stuff, don’t get mad, just laugh at their cute innocent, “it wasn’t me” faces, and you’ll be able to handle the situation much better.
When your kids get into mischief, choose to laugh instead of angrily yelling at them. Choose to see the funny side instead of a “YOU are SO IN TROUBLE!”.
When we laugh, we feel better, which in turn causes us to act nicer. Seriously! Laughter has so many health benefits. You will find yourself feeling happier, even if you have a lot of stress going on in your life.
I strongly urge you to find moments in your day to laugh, not only by yourself, or with your children, but especially with your husband. Find something funny to tell him when he gets home from work, or before you go to bed, or even at bed! Enjoy a lovely laugh before going to sleep – it will help.
